If you or your family is considering nursing home care for you or a loved one, many times it is not a decision that comes easily. There is help and assistance with nursing home care. The first contact should be the primary care doctor. He can help you to decide if that person will need to have nursing home care. The immediate family is a support system that is also needed at this time. Case managers in hospitals and social service workers are trained in nursing home care.

It is likely that your city also has a department on aging and the staff at this department level can also be very helpful as the plan for nursing home care takes affect. Medicare and Medicaid staff is also helpful in determining financial help. All nursing homes have staff that deal with placement and if the person is in the hospital they will work on your behalf to make this transition a smooth and effortless time for the person and their family. Every nursing home has a person who will work on your behalf at anytime and they are called Ombudsmen. Their main focus is your rights of a nursing home resident.

Have you ever asked yourself how much does it really cost for a nursing home placement? Well charges always depend on the seniors need. The more care the resident requires then the higher the cost will be. Nursing home charges will range from 5thousand dollars for light care and could be up to 10 thousand dollars per month in advance care. It could be more than that. It depends on what city you live in. On the plus side medicare will pay for rehabilitation for a certain number of days 100 days maximum. On the downside once medicare is up the senior will have to start paying for their services out of pocket for their care. Nursing homes are the most expensive option for care since you are paying for professional services and access to all the skilled professionals such as registered nurses, physical therapist, occupational therapist, dietitian and social workers. Assisted living facilities would be much more moderately priced because the seniors do not need intensive nursing care but generally assistance with daily living. These prices are around 3 thousand to 5 thousand dollars for the average placement. This could be a great alternative to nursing homes as their is excellent care due to the small number of residents.

Most of us want and need to be independent for as long as we can. We enjoy living our lives with as much freedom as possible; however, there comes a time for many of us when we can’t continue to live in an independent way. There are certain indications/signs that will tell you when it’s time for your loved one to live in a nursing home. This decision is hard for most of us but when we see someone we love in poor health or confused, and do not have the physical and mental strengths they once had, then finding a competent and caring nursing home may be the right thing to do.

There are certain indications that a person needs to go to a nursing home, where they can receive the quality care that they need. Here are a few signs that will help you make that decision:

You will know that it’s time for a nursing home when he or she is letting the bills and other types of mail pile up. This may be a sign that they feel unable or overwhelmed with these tasks
The apartment or home is becoming cluttered and dirty. Again, the person may be feeling overwhelmed with ordinary chores or just feels too tired to do them.
He or she is losing weight and shows little interest in food.
Again, he or she begins wearing the same clothes and is not keeping a good hygiene
The older person may be struggling when preparing meals, are forgetting to clean the dishes or showing no interest in preparing meals.
Depression may be affecting him or her and they are unable to tell you why they feel depressed.
The older person has been falling down more and is keeping to themselves too much”is becoming a recluse.

When you see these signs and symptoms in your loved one, talk with a nursing home manager and he or she will help you with this very important matter.
